ENTRANCE. A small work on wood panel from an encounter I had in a deep gorge in Central Australia. As I wandered up the stony floor of the gorge with the steep sides closing in almost within touching distance each side of me, I saw a bright vision of backlit trees ahead of me at the end of the gorge... just like a stained glass window in a cathedral. This glowing image of red and pink was framed and compressed by the mighty stone walls and was absolutely mesmerising. These things become paintings. Artwork: CATHERINE CASSIDY. This little work on wood panel titled Entrance, is now showing in ABSTRACTION. This exciting exhibition of many personal visions by Defiance Gallery artists is a must-see and is now open at Defiance Gallery Sydney. I walked up a narrow cathedral-like secret gorge in Central Australia to be met at the far end with an illuminated, back- lit image of trees glowing in the late sun. Never forgot that surprise. It’s the little things that often emerge later and realise themselves into something powerful. I remember the wonderful Howard Hodgkin talking about the condensed, emotional power of the small image- ( of which he was an absolute master) . How it can overtake big works and pull you across the room. Big works can lose themselves in ‘vista’ and gesture. But a little painting can contain such force in its intimacy and intensity. I mainly work big but this conundrum of the small is getting more and more enticing. Also affordable and hangable anywhere! Polymers, oilstick, aerosol and collage on wood panel. Very happy to be a featured artist in Amber Creswell’s fabulous new book ABSTRACTION. This painting evolved after several trips traipsing around the mysterious Mound Springs in Kati Thanda ( Lake Eyre) National Park in remote SA. These pools, seemingly arising from the centre of the earth, bring Deep Time bubbling and scorching to the surface. Walking the powdery, moon- dust surface and peering in, all human reference is lost. You get rubbed out as this ancient land absorbs your very being. Recollecting this feeling later and understanding that the natural world and its intact continuity is more important than our endeavours keeps the work grounded and to a large extent, out of my hands. Tributary 152x152cm polymers, aerosol and oilstick on canvas. Now showing in ABSTRACTION a wonderful initiative by Defiance Gallery Sydney. This fabulous gallery has been showing Australian artists for, I think, 27 years now. They love their artists and it’s an honour to be showing with them again. This work comes from seeing the Warburton Groove from above Lake Eyre ( and few other musings on watercourses)... It feeds almost a kilometre into the centre of the lake, which is sometimes there, sometimes not. Now- you- see- it, now- you- don’t sort of country. Mysterious, ephemeral .. a magic land. Million Year Old Raindrop 152x152cm at Art2Muse Gallery Sydney. This work came about through my musings and travelling through Deep Time, which if you’ve spent anytime sitting on a rock in the outback, you can’t help being overcome by. The great swelling passage of time you can feel coming up out of the ground into the soles of your feet. I couldn’t help thinking that rain then is rain now. All water falls and comes back to us, over and over. in a great cyclical fashion. In Australia, great masses of water like The Great Artesian Basin store these million year old raindrops. Sometimes they surface hot, briny and bubbling- just to remind us of this other secret, subterranean world. Precious water.
